Denmark

Denmark is a country in Scandinavia located in Northern Europe. The official name of Denmark is ‘Kingdom of Denmark’ and includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Denmark consists of 406 islands and is with an average hight of 35m (!) above sea level one of the flattest and lowest situated countries in Europe.

The capitol of Denmark is Copenhagen and the national language is Danish. The name “Danmark” is said to originate from “Danernes mark” (= the field of the Danes). Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government.

Denmark dates back to the Viking Era conquering almost anything in sight – Norway, Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, parts of Sweden and England. Later on Denmark has also had colonies around the world, at one point making the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean part of the Danish Kingdom.

There’s a rich literary tradition in Denmark with authors like Hans Christian Andersen, famous for his fairytales, storyteller Karen Blixen and philosopher Søren Kierkegaard.

One of the fundamental aspects of Danish culture is “hygge” – nowhere exactly defined but often involves spending a calm, comfortable time with good friends or loved ones, often while enjoying good food and something to drink.

We look forward to welcome you all to our little kingdom, “hygge” around a bonfire telling stories about vikings and ugly ducklings, show you Copenhagen and the Little Mermaid, visit the Queens castle and explore the history filled streets and port of the capitol in a navy nation once eager to conquer the world now a culture and history rich world of its own.
